I don't want to get into the smack talk part of this thread, as I could really care less about it.
However, as a player that began the game as a miner 9 months ago, I really disagree with the original poster that one should pay a ransom. Getting ransomed once will only get you ransomed twice. And so on. The classic schoolyard/lunchmoney/bully thing.
As a noob trying to concentrate on industry you'll probably discover very quickly that most people aren't going to respect you until you can show them the business end of a weapon.
When I first got some access to an 0.0 (4 months into the game) with some tasty ore, it didn't take long for someone with guns to come by and ask for isk. Trying to negotiate, I offered 50% of the mining take (crokite) from every op if the pirates in question would be willing to provide some measure of protection from NPC rats and other potentially worse pirates. It really was a lucrative deal for these guys.
The message I got was pretty clear. They weren't interested in that form of negoitation. In fact, they were really arrogant about it. To them the isk didn't matter. They just wanted pvp. Although, I really don't see the challenge in shooting miner in barges? I guess I ran into really dumb pirates.
Well, to make a long story short, some months went by since then and seeing the original "negotiation" as a wake up call, I concentrated on training combat skills. After 5 months, this same corp war dec'c us thinking we are still defenseless.
Ah well, funny part is we formed a coalition with others in our position and went on the offensive. Isk wise our "coalition" is now working the enemy over with a leather strap on a daily basis. Our corp's already been involved with a couple of BS kills. And all because someone felt the need for a sensless war they could have avoided in the first place.
So just a friendly reminder to the pirates, sometimes you get what you wish for, just be careful it's exactly what you want.
Oh, and btw, I don't use implants, cause I've found it's really liberating knowing you have nothing to worry about losing in space.
So moral of the story for victims - don't pay ransom. Moral of the story for pirates - crime only pays when someone else can make you iskies. Pod or ransom, you'll get 0. Work out a deal instead and let them mine some rare ore, and you'll make out like bandits.
